Melbourne-based, award winning photographer Nicole Reed proclaims that, for her, photography is more than just a career – it’s her reason for living.
Rarely leaving the house, never mind the country, without her camera, Nicole is proud to have been bitten by the travel bug and searches for the muse of her next frame around every corner. While her work is undoubtedly artistic, Nicole draws inspiration from editorial, documentary and reportage photography, but above all, travel.
Nicole has exhibited in numerous solo shows, in Melbourne, Brisbane, New York and, along with the publication T-world Journal, has exhibited on Cockatoo Island in Sydney as part of the 2012 Outpost Project which included 40 portraits printed at over 2 metres high.
Her catalogue of exhibitions continues, with placements including the National Gallery Of Victoria, a commissioned work for White Night Melbourne, receiving high praise from national media for her photography and exhibition, with her solo projection placed onto the walls of the National Gallery of Victoria and a solo exhibition at The Patterson Gallery as part of the Independent Photography Festival 2014.
Nicole has also received countess commission proposals, allowing the photographer access to capture portraits of some very recognisable names and faces. Her reputation for not only capturing her sitters personal style and image, but also for accessing a deeper portrayal of personality from the subject, has provided Nicole with a broad spectrum of portrait commissions. From Australian sporting hero’s Melbourne Victory FC, iconic international artists including Milton Glaser, Ron English, Mike Giant and Anthony Lister to prolific photographers such as Ricky Powell, Martha Cooper and Estevan Orial. Nicole’s list of portraiture continues, documenting numerous fashion label founders, with Bobby Hundreds, Claw Money, Shawn Stussy and Rick Klotz having all sat for her.
Along with her versatile and adaptive style of portrait photography, Nicole has a niche talent for capturing urban environments, giving way for her to produce truly iconic image collections. Her documentation of urban sprawl, decay and abandon shows not only her sheer motivation for social commentary but also her innate ability to source beauty in places overlooked by the untrained eye. Shooting a fine balance of derelict and disused environments across the globe, including Indonesia, Japan, USA and her backyard of Australia, Nicole’s images dictate a combined set of emotions – a sense of mourning and celebration for what these places once were.

Nicole’s continuous drive to delve and develop her undoubtedly recognised unique approach to visual art has granted an international respect. Aside from winning awards such as The Desktop Create Award for Best Photographer in 2012, Nicole has also stood as key speaker at events including Semi Permanent, 2013.
