Leigh Ryan

Highly revered, prolific Australian producer Leigh Ryan (aka Plutonic Lab) is a 2008 ARIA Nominee as one half of popular Australian Hip-Hop group Muph & Plutonic and a 2009 UK Mercury Prize Winner, for his work with Speech Debelle. He is also a solo artist/performer and international tour drummer for Australian Hip-Hop group Hilltop Hoods.

Plutonic Lab’s eclectic music production has provided the backdrop for a vast number of artists including G-Love (Special Sauce), Renee Geyer, Black Milk, Fatlip (Pharcyde), Esoteric (7L & Esoteric), Drapht, Pegz, Eternia (Canada), Taskforce (Lowlife) Urthboy, Hilltop Hoods, Wiley, Speech Debelle, Lotek (Big Dada), The Grouch & Eligh (Living Legends), Tumi (South Africa), Aceyalone, Mika9, to name just a few, and has worked with labels such as Warner, Sony (Asia), Elefant Traks, LandSpeed (U.S.), Brick Records (U.S.) Big Dada (UK) and Australia’s highly respected Hip- Hop Label Obese Records.

Plutonic has performed numerous shows in Australia, North America, Europe, the UK and Asia, opening for the likes of El-P (Run The Jewels) The Pharcyde, People Under The Stairs, Ozomatli, Mad Professor, Lee Scratch Perry, MC Supernatural, DJ Shadow, The Next Men, Mr Lif, Cage, Swollen Members, Lupe Fiasco, Tricky and The Streets. His stellar reputation has also led to shows at events such as Cockatoo Island Festival, Obese Block Party, Pyramid Rock Festival, Falls Festival, Big Day Out, Groovin The Moo & Splendour In The Grass amongst many others worldwide.

It is with this massively impressive list of achievements that quite unsurprising, Plutonic Lab’s list of accolades is extensive. Websites, radio stations and industry foundations have all acclaimed his musical talents, acknowledging these with awards such as Australian Hip-Hop community site ozhiphop.com’s ‘Best Producer’ for a consecutive three years, along with ARIA and Australian Music Prize nominations.

Not only has his work been included multiple times in triple j’s ‘Hottest 100’, but Plutonic has also received the highly coveted triple j ‘Feature Album’ for each of Muph & Plutonic’s three albums, along with Pegz’s LP ‘Axis’, produced by Plutonic Lab. His third LP “Codes Over Colours” was also a feature album on Melbourne’s RRR radio and many other national independent radio programs.

Further proof of Plutonic Lab’s immense skill set can be seen in the musician’s production selected to feature in both film and television including HBO’s “Girls”, TNT’s “Franklin & Bash” & feature films “X”, BAFTA award winner Noel Clarke’s “4321′′ and “Chronicle” amongst others.
